Quests Prologue: The Sending

Well folks here is the prologue for the Quests series. A few things to keep in mind about the series:

The series begins with 3 sets of characters, elves, goblins & trolls and fairies. The episodes alternate between them at first until the stories come together.

For those of you familiar with the series please note that the names of many episodes, especially the first few have been changed and all episodes have been edited. Also the episodes involving the Brownie elves have been cut from the story, not because I don't like them but becuase I felt they detracted from the overall story arch. I may someday post a couple Brownie stories as bonus episodes.

Now please enjoy Quests!

Prologue:The Sending

All worlds are reflections of the kingdom of Light, Fate thought as she stood on a mountaintop in the land of the immortals examining her living loom which was made from tree roots. They reflect the kingdom similar to the way water reflects sunlight. As in water where reflections battle their shadows, so also Light wars with Darkness.

“The planet Irowasa is no exception,” she sighed as her eye fixed on a tangle near the bottom of the cloth.

The Dark Magicians had made such a mess with that ridiculous war they insisted on starting over the rights the use of magic should afford them. The result was a mesh of unruly threads which refused to cooperate with her. At least she had been able to weave the threads of enough good people together for a treaty to be signed. Now what was she to do with a sheet so terribly knotted near the bottom?

“It’s time to start over,” she decided. “After all this cloth chronicles a millennium already. It’s time to weave new people into this world.”

She nodded, pleased with idea and got out her scissors. The world would still have traces of those darker threads, the monsters introduced by the twisted minds of Dark wizards. That couldn’t be helped. She snipped the first thread, then the second. Fate knew that with every cut she made another servant returned to the kingdom of Light or Darkness, depending on which master he served. A few threads were not caught in the tangle, she would leave those. They would give her a place to start. Finished with her cutting, Fate put her scissors away and pulled out her threads, already picturing the patterns and colors she wanted to put into this beautiful new tapestry.

She was searching for just the right shade of blue to begin, when a brilliant white light dazzled her. A nearby pond, her porthole into Irowasa, became so bright it seemed to be an earthbound sun. A soft breeze brushed Fate’s face, and with this breeze came a voice. Fate knew at once that the voice belonged to the all powerful Lord of Light.

“What are you working on?” He asked.

“I’m starting a new project,” Fate replied.

He watched as she pulled out a few more colors, then seeing the new tapestry through her mind’s eye He added, “It’s a beautiful idea, but I doubt that design will get you very far.”

Fate paused in her work. The Lord of Light always knew best and she knew she should listen to His advice.

“What should I do?” she asked. “You gave me the task of weaving Irowasa’s destiny and it seems like time to start a new fabric. I don’t think I can pick up on the old one now.”

“I don’t want you to continue the old one,” He said. “You’re right. It is time to start a new cloth. If you’ll let Me, I can help you make a better design.”

“What sort of design would be best?” asked Fate, cocking her head in interest.

“Weave together the destinies of the new servants the Lord of Darkness will send into the world for his destructive purposes and the ones I must send to keep those demons in check. Give them the proper training to accomplish quests through which the destiny of Irowasa will be formed. The tapestry which will develop from their stories weaving in and out of each other will be a design more wonderful than you can imagine.”

“I do like the sound of that,” said Fate with a small smile. “Where should I start? It seems so complex.”

“Thread your loom,” He said. “It will come to you.”

The light faded and there was only the faint whisper in the wind to remind Fate that the Lord of Light was still present in everything around her. As instructed, she threaded the loom and wove the first threads together. It was as if her fingers had a mind of their own. First some dark colors…

In the back of her mind Fate heard the Lord of Darkness summon some of his servants. His voice boomed over them as he commanded, “Go and keep my power strong. If you are destructive enough you can make my power even stronger!”

Then he sent them into Irowasa like a thunderstorm. They went to live in the deep places of the earth where no light reached. These places were cold like their hearts and the heart of their master. Fate watched their coming on her loom. Now for some brighter colors…

The Lord of Light summoned His servants. He called forward the chosen ones in a soft voice that was no more than a whisper, speaking their secret names which only He knew. Then He blessed them and sent them into Irowasa. They entered the world like the coming of dawn, soft points of Light breaking on the world. They were sent to shining lakes whose waters rippled softly in a breeze and a tangled forest stretching down from bright green mountains which shone like jewels. These designs Fate wove separately yet through them she got a glimpse of a bigger pattern. So began the servants’ quests, and also their stories.

Continue to Episode 1.

Quests Serial Novel, Coming Soon!

I must once again apologize for my extended silence and lack of updates this year. It took me a lot longer than I was hoping to pull my new writing projects together and decide which ones to give my attention. However, I'm finally ready to come out of the woodwork and make the big announcement about the wonderful new things you can expect to read from yours truly.

I think several of you enjoyed reading the Silver Sword Saga as I posted episodes here in a serial novel format for a little over a year. If you haven't read these stories yet you can find the collection for sale on Amazon Kindle, Barnes and Noble Nook or in this paperback edition. I really enjoyed the serial novel style of writing and have decided to continue to post stories to my blog in a serial format before releasing them for sale.

That brings me to my next bit of news: starting the end of May/beginning of June I will be serializing my Quests series and posting episodes to my blog every Wednesday. The Quests 1 prologue involving some Irowasan mythology which sets the scene for the series will be posted Wednesday, May 29 followed by the 1st episode June 5. If for whatever reason I run into delays in releasing an episode, I will announce so here along with a new estimated release date.

Now some of you may be thinking, "Okay, but the first book of Quest is already up for sale and I can just go buy it and read it." Well, it is true that I published book one a few years ago, but since the set up of the series practically begs to be serialized, I've decided to take the first book down, make some changes and re-release it via the blog before releasing the rest of the series. As of June 1st the old version of Quests 1 will no longer be available for sale, so if you desperately want to buy the old version, May 2013 is your last chance to do so!

Your next questions are probably, "What can I expect to see in the new version of Quests? What's going to be different about the serialized edition?" The answer is that you will see a much more streamlined story. There were far too many times in book one where I rambled or went off on long tangents. All of those places will be cut out, which I'll admit will mean that I'll be cutting whole episodes in places and dropping some fairly good material! :,( The bottom line, though, is that it will be a much stronger, tighter, more exciting story that sticks to its central plot. For those of you who don't know or forgot what that plot is, here's the summery from the back of book 1:

Training for quests seemed hard but the quest for Fairy Wood may prove even harder...

Beritta, princess of elves, longs for the adventure of a real quest until she and her friend, Faralasa, are sent to Fairy Wood to protect unicorns. Once there, they learn that some sinister force is at work, polluting the forest’s waterways. Meanwhile, in deep twisting caverns of an underground city Fedrick, a goblin boy, and Felnar, a troll girl, must convince a terrible snake monster named Serpina to become an ally before she kills all the creatures living under the mountain. When the dwarves are attacked by Serpina and the goblins, a fairy messenger named Lilac, and her friends give the dwarves a gift to protect them. Then, as the water in Fairy Wood mysteriously becomes poisoned, the fairies and elves join forces to fight the growing threat and protect the forest.

Join their Quests...

I would love to have lots of readers following this and all my serial novels, so please help me spread the word and return on May 29th to begin reading the Quests series!

Winter News 2012

Hello Readers!

Sorry for the lack of new posts recently, I've been busy with the baby and my new ideas are coming together a bit slowly. Still, I think it is about time I write a note to let you know what's new with my writing.

My biggest writing news is that in the coming year I will be shifting my genre focus from fantasy to adventure. You can probably expect to see some samples of my new swash-buckling tales some time after New Year's or whenever I pull enough of my notes together to decide where to begin.

I also plan to rewrite my drafts of Quests 2 and my NaNoWriMo fantasy book from 2010 with the working title, "Magic War", so watch for updates on those stories this next year as well.

My last bit of news is that I still plan to write a new series of stories to be featured here on the blog in the way that I posted the Silver Sword Saga stories last year and the year before. I will announce the basic plot of the new series in a couple weeks and you should expect to see the opening episode in early January.

I wish you all the best of the season and success in your preparations for Christmas!

Birth of a Queen

Under the light of a blue moon a soft cry pierces the night; the cry of a newborn babe. Messengers carry the news to waiting hordes of Fairy Land, "A girl has been born in the Vale of the Rose!"

The words are met with shouts of joy. This girl is her parents' first born and heir. She is destined to be queen of the Fair Folk, ruling in the name of Light.

Mark the time, 3:21, like a countdown, 3,2,1. She is a tiny living spark, reversing the deep dark of night.

The fairies laugh and dance and cheer, their celebrations weaving new and glorious magics in honor of their newborn queen.

The child is only dimly aware of the widespread joy her birth brings. Her destiny seems but a distant haze on the edge of the horizon. For now she is simply content to lie peacefully in her mother's arms.

April News

Well hello again readers! I thought I should write a quick post to let you all know what is happening with my writing.

A few months ago my husband and I discovered that I am pregnant with our first child! Baby is about 19 weeks along and is due August 26. We don't know yet if we're having a boy or a girl. As a result of this wonderful new development in my life, much of my writing has moved to the back burner. Due to the slowness of progress being made on all my writing projects there are 3 things of which you should be aware.

1. Quest 2: Penumbra will most likely not be released this summer as I first announced. I do have a draft of the book completed but I just haven't gotten the time to sit down and give it all the edits and rewrites it needs. I will announce a new release date once I have a chance to look it over and determine how much work remains to be done on it.

2. It may take me longer than planned to post episodes for the new series of short stories I hoped to begin here on the blog after finishing the Silver Sword Saga. Continue to watch for updates on this one, though, since if I do find a few minutes to sit down and write I may be able to complete a few short blog length stories.

3. I have not started any new projects. This may be more due to mental distraction, however, since I've had plenty of times when I've been busy but still had ideas for stories to write once I got the chance. At the moment all my story ideas seem to be coming together very slowly and are not fully formed enough to be full projects. Again, this may change in a couple months so watch for updates.

I apologize if you are disappointed that there is not much new to read here. Please understand that even writers have lives outside their stories and sometimes we just get busy. If you are dying for something new to reading try heading over to the Amazon Breakthrough Novel Award site and downloading the first couple chapters of one of the books that made it to the quarter or semi-final rounds. There are lots of great writers there who would love to have your support.

Happy reading!
